Nature Tour at Crowley Museum

Enjoy a one mile guided nature walk through a rare piece of undisturbed native Florida land and learn about the plants, birds, animals and bugs of five native Florida habitats; a pine Flatwoods, Oak Hammock, Maple Swamp, Sawgrass Marsh and the Myakka River.  The walk takes place on our 2000 ft. boardwalk which is wheelchair and baby stroller friendly. Art Z Girls

The Zonta Club of Sarasota is proud to announce a youth art exhibit, reception, and auction that will benefit Girls Inc. “Art Z Girls” will be held on Sunday, July 27 at the Art Center of Sarasota from 2 to 4 p.m. The artwork exhibited will be created by girls enrolled in the Girls Inc. summer program, and will be sold in a silent auction. Voter Registration Deadline Today
Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections offices will remain open until midnight on Monday, July 28, which is the deadline to register to vote in the August 26 Primary Election. Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent said staff will be accepting new voter registrations, and address, name and party changes at offices in the Terrace Building, 101 South Washington Boulevard, Sarasota; the Robert L. United Way Survey

The United Way of Manatee County is conducting a through review of the issues facing our community with a focus on the United Way’s role and ability to effectively address those issues. The Community Priorities 2008 Survey is now available online. United Way is using the services of Survey Monkey to receive and tabulate the results. The input of the community is very important to this effort and the future direction of the United Way of Manatee County. The Community Priorities 2008 Survey is available at www.uwmc.net. Boys and Girls Club Back to School Drive

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota and United Way of Sarasota to help 250 elementary school kids get ready for school.  You can purchase school supplies or donate money towards backpacks.  Donations need to be dropped off before July 25th.  For a location and list of needed items, call 366-7940.

The First Tee of Sarasota/Manatee officially moved their programming services to Rolling Green Golf Club. Soldier Snack Drive

Manatee's Operation Troop Support is holding a Soldier Snack Drive for our local heroes.  Stop by and show your support on Saturday and Sunday from 9a-5p at the Walmart on 301 in Palmetto.  All snacks collected will be added to a local soldier's monthly snack pack to be shipped overseas. 

Do Something Right

Pop star and American Idol™ winner Jordin Sparks has teamed with DoSomething.org, the organization that empowers teens to take action in their communities, and Staples, Inc. to ask Manatee County teens to make a difference this summer. The Do Something 101, (www.dosomething101.com), campaign encourages teens to collect school supplies and drop them off at their nearest Staples store, from July 6 through August 31, to ensure they get into the hands of deserving students just in time to head back to school. Staples is kick-starting the campaign by donating $50,000 in school supplies to the cause. In addition, Staples customers can also get involved by donating $2 at any Staples store location, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting local teens in need. All school supplies and donations collected locally will be given to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County, an educational and not-for-profit organization that serves disadvantaged youth enabling them to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

Ca d'Zan Audio Tours

Visitors to The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art can experience the Cà d’Zan Mansion using custom Apple iPod audio tours beginning July 1, 2008. The audio tours provide the visitor with a comprehensive overview of the first-floor and gardens at the Cà d’Zan Mansion. The state-of-the-art 23-stop tour is set with period music and character voices, as well as high-resolution digital images of the Mansion. Boots and Badges Blood Drive

With hoses in hand and sirens ready, first responders are gearing up for the 3rd Annual Suncoast Communities Blood Bank “Boots and Badges” blood drive competition. Ten first responder agencies from two counties will take part in this year’s event, which runs July 1st to August 5th. The goal of the competition is to raise a minimum of 400 units of blood for local hospitals during slow summer months when blood donations for our area typically decrease by 15%.  For specific blood drives,

Majestic Ma Xi Tuan at Asolo Theater

Manatee Red Cross Summer Hours


Beginning the week of June 9, 2008, the American Red Cross Manatee County Chapter's Lakewood Ranch location at 10311 Malachite Drive will be open on a summer hour schedule. The office will be open from 9am to 4pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and closed Mondays and Wednesdays. The Chapter Headquarters at 2905 59th St. West in Bradenton will be open its year-round hours of Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm. Emergency Services are always free of charge and available 24x7 and can be obtained by calling 941.792.8686.

Give Blood, Get Gas!

Our local hospitals are in need of blood, and we are all in need of some relief at the pump. So right now Florida’s Blood Centers (FBC), your local blood bank, is giving donors who come to its branches some gas to say thank you. Branch donors will receive a $10 gas card when they make an appointment or walk into a center to donate blood. And each day, one donor (system wide) will receive $100 in gas. The winner is selected at random, and each day branch donors are automatically registered to win the $100 award. Gas cards are limited to one per donor. Kids Summer Spectrum @ MCC

For the first time this summer, the annual Manatee Community College Kids’ Summer Spectrum will expand to serve ages 12 through 15 with Youth Extravaganza classes geared to career exploration, video game design and more at MCC Lakewood Ranch, 7131 Professional Parkway East. The summer camp traditionally serves ages 7 through 11. Beginning June 16, four weekly sessions of Kids’ Summer Spectrum Youth Extravaganza will be offered. Fees range from $70 to $135 per session. Embracing Our Differences in North Port

MCC Summer 2008 Open House


Manatee Community College will offer an opportunity during Summer 2008 Open House programs for high school students, their families and others interested in higher education to learn about the college and the programs and services it offers. Visitors may take campus tours, and an MCC scholarship drawing will be held for eligible high school students. Summer Driver's Ed Classes

The Sarasota Board of Education, in conjunction with Ault’s Driver Education Center, will hold a FREE Summer Driver’s Education Program in Sarasota County. The program will be offered in two sessions. The first session will be held on June 16, 2008 thru July 1, 2008 at Booker and Venice High Schools. The second session will be held on July 2, 2008 thru July 18, 2008 at Sarasota and North Port High Schools. The program will consist of behind the wheel instruction. Any Sarasota County student who is at least 15 years old and enrolled in a public, private, religious, charter, or home program school, and possesses a valid Learners License at the beginning of the session is eligible to enroll. Parents are encouraged to contact their insurance companies regarding possible reduction in premium with completion of this program. All instructors are state-licensed professionals. Applications may be picked up at any Sarasota County Middle or High School. For more information contact your school’s guidance office.

Registration for summer classes for youth, teens and adults is underway now at Venice Little Theatre. All classes will be held at the theatre at 140 West Tampa Avenue on the island in Venice. Foodbank Needs Volunteers

Volunteers are needed at The Food Bank of Manatee to help with daily operations, including food basket assembly, food sorting, food basket distribution, and produce bagging. The work load at The Food Bank is heavier than ever, as the majority of volunteers are leaving town for the summer. Volunteers are welcome Monday thru Friday between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:00 pm. Volunteers should be able to lift boxes. Business and professional groups are welcome. Exodus USA Needs Donations

Exodus USA is a non-profit Christian faith-based organization that's primary goal is to help people and their families break the bondage of substance abuse. We have several centers here in the Sarasota area where the rehabilitation process itself takes part. Rabbit Rescue

Little Miracles Rabbit Rescue is a non-profit group that rescues domestic rabbits, as well as other small and "exotic" pets such as ferrets, chinchillas, guinea pigs, etc. We take them from kill shelters as well as strays, owner surrenders, etc. We have around 30 domestic rabbits for adoption at any given time, and we hold adoption appointments, fundraising events and do lots of web-based operations to raise money for our spay/neuter and medical fund. The Artists' Market has found a permanent home, conveniently
